China 2019 (3/10) – Framily

We took a trip to Taiwan and China in June 2019. Like most of our trips, I began writing about it shortly after. However, I got distracted somehow and never gotten around to finish it. Over a year later, picking this project back up is providing me with a nice boost of vacation memories while home-bound under COVID.

Because of my constant itch to see more of the world, using vacation days to “return home” to Taiwan had rarely been an exciting prospect. Why would I just sit at home or stroll through the same old neighborhoods when I could be exploring, say, the streets of Hanoi? Having actually landed here, though, I was grateful for being back. In fact I yearned for more. There’s nothing like having zero agenda and just hanging out with people that mattered. My kids agreed. They had a great time with the grandparents, and remembered Taiwan way more fondly than other places we had vacationed to.

My dad showing off his specialty – Xian-styled thick noodles (褲帶麵). It’s worth noting that he became obsessed with this dish after trying it with us during our last vacation together. Of course, while I whine all the time about wanting to return to Xian for food, he learned to make this stuff himself.

In addition to my parents, we also spent some time with Wesley’s family. Wesley was Xuan’s classmate from school, and the two of them had been close friends this year. His family lived downstairs from us in the same condo building, too, so we’d hangout from time to time as neighbors. They maintained close ties to their family in Taipei, and regularly traveled back home during school breaks. Since we happened to be in Taipei at the same time, we agreed to meet up.

We love hanging out with Wesley’s family because they are foodies, too. This was a unique beef noodle soup restaurant that they recommended
Too. Much. Food.
After the meal together, we made plans to meet up at Taipei 101 to show the kids the observation deck
